Walsall surgery acknowledged by Care Quality Commission for its strong quality of care

Outreach to vulnerable patients sees The Wharf Family Practice excel in latest CQC report

Walsall-based GP surgery The Wharf Family Practice, ran by Phoenix Primary Care (part of The Practice Group), has achieved recognition by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for its ‘strong practices’ implemented through an above and beyond approach to care throughout the local area including such practices as street healthcare provision for the more vulnerable patients in the community.

The Wharf Family Practice were awarded ‘good’ in the categories comprising the safety and caring nature of the services, the responsiveness to patient needs and strong leadership from the wider Group.

One of the many services that achieved a ‘good’ status was the care provided to patients, whether they are working age people and families or the more vulnerable including people experiencing poor mental health. For example, the Wharf Family Practice has set up a clinical lead for dementia patients, who provides personalised care including a comprehensive personal care plan. In addition, the practice has provided street healthcare for groups including the homeless, in an initiative designed to make it easier for these people to receive the care and help they need.

Rachel Cupitt, Practice Manager for The Wharf Family Practice, explains: “We have been working very hard to provide the best possible care to our community, so to be recognised as ‘good’ across our services by the CQC is a tremendous achievement. Alongside our care programmes, we are planning a number of fire and flu clinics in association with the local fire brigade from April. Not only making sure those that need flu jabs have them, we are also providing home safety checks to the older and more vulnerable patients in the community.”

Ajit Kadirgamar, Clinical Director commented on the good practices stressed in the CQC inspection: “We’re delighted with the news that the Wharf Family Practice has received such a positive report from the CQC. We work extremely hard with our practices to ensure each standard is met and it is testament to such work that the CQC have recognised this unequivocal commitment to upholding the very best patient care. We’re proud to be helping take a step towards improving healthcare in Walsall and are thrilled that the CQC has recognised this.”

Announced and unannounced inspections are carried out by the CQC on a regular basis. A high mark, indicating good or exceptionally well performing practices, is rarely achieved and therefore considered a great success by the healthcare sector.
